Joseph Carchedi, MD, ABIHM, IFMCP, ACN, is a physician-executive, founder, and medical director with more than 25 years of experience in internal medicine, emergency medicine, integrative care, and functional medicine. He is the founder of the Lower Gwynedd Functional Medicine Institute and a board-certified practitioner of the internationally respected Institute for Functional Medicine.
Dr. Carchedi earned his medical degree at Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” in Rome and completed his residency at Finch University of Health Sciences / The Chicago Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. He is board certified, fluent in English and Italian, and brings decades of hospital-based experience into his private practice. In addition, he is a licensed medical marijuana certifying physician.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Carchedi has served as founder of multiple medical practices, medical director for large clinical organizations, board-level advisor, and adjunct professor in nutrition and emergency medicine. His background includes leadership roles in hospital systems, quality-improvement committees, and physician-training environments – giving his patients the rare benefit of a doctor who understands both frontline medicine and high-level medical oversight.
In his clinical work, Dr. Carchedi practices a deeply integrative and functional approach – seeking to uncover the root causes of illness rather than simply suppress symptoms. He works with patients facing complex concerns involving immune dysfunction, fatigue syndromes, metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalance, women’s health, cancer-related issues, anxiety, chronic pain, mood disorders, and weight management.
His care blends advanced diagnostics and genomics, precision nutrition, herbal and supplemental strategies, IV therapies, platelet-rich plasma treatments, lifestyle medicine, and – when appropriate – traditional pharmaceuticals. Every plan is highly individualized, evidence-informed, and built around each patient’s biology, goals, and long-term health.
Dr. Carchedi believes that the future of medicine lies in partnership, explaining, “Patients today are well informed, and I encourage them to ask questions – so that together we can discover therapies that truly optimize their health and wellbeing.”
Outside the exam room, Dr. Carchedi lives the lifestyle he teaches. He is an avid athlete and cyclist and earlier in his career served as a team physician for professional cycling organizations – experiences that continue to inform his work in performance, resilience, and preventive health. He is also a community educator on nutrition and healthy aging, with a particular passion for the Mediterranean diet and a food-as-medicine philosophy.
Born and trained in Italy, Dr. Carchedi is a formally trained Italian sommelier and an enthusiastic home cook who loves preparing traditional meals with fresh, seasonal ingredients – bringing cultural depth and genuine joy to his conversations about nutrition and longevity.
At the heart of Dr. Carchedi’s work is a deep commitment to education, partnership, and long-term health. He is passionate about helping patients truly understand what is happening in their bodies, feel confident in their choices, and take an active role in restoring balance and preventing disease. With decades of experience and a calm, thoughtful approach, his goal is to help people not only feel better – but build resilient health for years to come.
